Stephen C. Carey, Ph.D., CAE, has been President of Association Management and Marketing Resources (AMMR) since July 1995. As the lead strategist and facilitator, Steve has led AMMR's consultant team on over 100 major association management consulting, strategic planning and market research assignments with trade associations, professional societies, and other C-3 organizations in the key areas of governance, communications and marketing.
Steve is one of the few association executives and consultants to be appointed to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The award is the highest level of national recognition for organizational performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive. He is also a charter member of the American League of Lobbyists and a charter class Fellow of ASAE.
Prior to his AMMR appointment, Steve was the President and CEO of a trade and a professional association for 14 years.
He has written, published, or edited 100+ articles and several books on association alternative future strategic planning, governance, marketing, communication and management topics. He conceived of, published and edited the first association marketing textbook entitled, Marketing the Non-profit Association and wrote the first association marketing and communications planning guide entitled, The Association Marketing and Communication Planning Guide with Best Practices and Templates, one chapter of which is devoted to developing the value equation. Most recently, he published the 2006 Strategic Planning and Research Guide, selected by ASAE for publication in their publications inventory. Steve was also selected as one of the 12 most influential association executives by the Washington Business Journal, and is considered to be one of the industry's leading experts on strategic, communications and marketing planning. Steve was presented with Three Circle of Excellence Awards by the Maryland Society of Association Executives in 2002, 2004 and again in 2006 for his governance, marketing and communications courses and textbooks for association executives.
Steve was also awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star Citations for service to the country.
