Principal, Global Association Consulting
Past President, American Society of Association Executives
An association veteran and a top thought leader in the association community, Michael S. Olson is a principal with Global Association Consulting, where he works with association and NGO leaders across the world. Michael served as Executive Vice President for SmithBucklin, where he had overall responsibility for client management and business development in the company's Washington, DC, office. As a member of SmithBucklin's senior management team, Michael also played an integral role in the company's association industry relations efforts.
Prior to joining SmithBucklin, Michael served as the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) President and CEO for five years. During the same period, he also served as President and CEO for both the ASAE Foundation, the country's leading “think tank” focused on forecasting and analyzing trends that affect associations, and ASAE Services, Inc., which offers member benefit programs in areas such as financial services and insurance to associations and their members.
Under Michael's leadership, ASAE significantly expanded its membership internationally, in the private sector and on the collegiate level, thus creating a more diverse and representative membership for the organization while also promoting association management as a career. He led the creation of partnership agreements with 56 allied societies of association executives, the expansion of the ASAE Foundation's endowment to nearly $10 million, and the upgrading of ASAE's information systems, Web site, conference center, magazine and infrastructure. Michael's tenure also included creating and launching a major public awareness campaign, aimed at boosting awareness of the value associations deliver to the U.S. economy and business community.
Michael served on the board of directors of the Points of Light Foundation and the Travel Business Roundtable. He was also a member of the adjunct faculty at North Carolina State University in Raleigh in its public affairs graduate program in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. He currently serves on the DC Federal City Council, executive committee of the DC Police Fund and is a member of the Economic Club of Washington.
